Burkina Faso 1 – 1 South Africa

Bafana Bafana began their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso on Saturday evening.

Dean Furman’s 80th minute opener was cancelled out by Banou Diawara’s stoppage time equaliser, after the Bafana defence was caught napping.

After a lively start, the home side were awarded a penalty after 10 minutes, however Itumeleng Khune guessed the right way to save Jonathan Pitroipa’s penalty.

Makola then produced a fine save from Koffi as his low set-pice from just outside the box bounced awkwardly for the Burkinabe shot stopper, who did well to parry the shot away for a corner.

Khune was proving to be the difference between the two sides, as the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper produced another fine save to keep out a header after 27 minutes.

Bafana, meanwhile, did have a couple chances of their own, although Herve Koffi proved his worth by saving efforts from Hlompho Kekana and Mpho Makola.

The hosts ended as the stronger of the two sides, but they were left frustrated by Khune, who looked unbeatable in the opening 45 minutes.

Bafana started the second half on a better note, but should have taken the lead after 50 minutes as Eleazar Rodgers headed wide from six-yards out.

With Bafana struggling to break down the visitors defence, Shakes Mashaba introduced Oupa Manyisa for the in-effective Keagon Dolly after 65 minutes.

The Orlando Pirates midfielder should have broken the deadlock 10 minutes later, but he failed to hit the target from close range.

However, Bafana broke the deadlock after 79 minutes when a clearance landed at the feet of Dean Furman, who rifled the ball home from the edge of the box.

With two minute left of regualtion time, Manyisa needlessly dived into a challenge inside his own area as the referee pointed to the spot for a second time, however, Traore cracked under pressure and ballooned his penalty..

However, Burkina Faso eventually secured the equaliser in the 90th minute when  Banou Diawara fired home from close range, after Bafana failed to deal with a corner.
